Bilocation is the splitting of the consciousness in order to be present in two separate locations at one time. It is often a subconscious occurrence, with the individual unaware of the activity. However, a few cases have been reported where the individual is able to willfully control being in two places at the same time. The body doubles in bilocation are known as “wraiths,” and they are often indistinguishable from the real persons with the ability to interact with friends and family as they would.
A doppelganger, on the other hand, is the ghostly double of a person who is usually seen doing the actions of the individual in advance. It is the German word for “double walker,” although doppelgangers are known for doing other things than merely walking. They are also seen by both the original person and his or her friends or family. Doppelgangers are often believed to be harbingers of an impending death or disaster.
The bilocation and doppelganger phenomena have existing records of having been experienced by individuals from all walks of life throughout the years. Bilocation was said to have been experienced by mystics, saints, and yogis in a regular basis. Famous personalities who have been known to exhibit bilocation include St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. Anthony of Padua, and St. Pio of Pietrelcina. Famous personlalities who have experienced seeing their own doppelgangers include Abraham Lincoln, the English poet Percy Shelley, French novelist Guy de Maupassant, and English poet John Donne. Even Queen Elizabeth I of England and Wolfgang von Goethe were also able to experience seeing their own doubles.
